Subject: Please don't (ODF all versions)

Dear all,

Fans of Star Trek (Next Gen) will remember one of the defining
characteristics of the android Mr Data was that he could not contract
verbal forms (his evil double, Lore, could though).

Ah, to have a Mr Data to look over the ODF spec. He'd find:

* "Application [sic] may preserve the content elements they don't
render." (9.4.1)

* "Only tables which match at least one include filter, and don't match
any exclude filter, will be displayed." (11.2.16)

(also "will" -> "shall" here)

* "Formulas don't have a predefined syntax" (17.1)

* "[...] the current set of sub-paths won't be filled" (18.152)

* "[...] the current set of sub-paths won't be stroked" (18.152)

* "[...] provide a fall-back for applications that don't support the
[...]" (18.363, 18.518.1, 18.518.2, 18.708, 19.333, 19.334, 19.335)

* "Office application user interfaces may only display animation
elements that don't have a presentation:master-element attribute"
(18.404)

* "To support applications that don't support relative with [sic] and
heights" (18.515, 18.516.1, 19.329)

* "Cells contained in the row that don't have a table:style-name
attribute" (18.621)

* "Data layout fields usually don't have a name." (18.659)

(double bad here)

* "The table:show-empty attribute specifies whether or not fields that
don't have any members should be displayed." (18.715)

* "To support applications that don't support relative width" (19.330.1)

* "other formats that don't have script-dependent attributes" (19.346)

These contracted forms should be eliminated and uncotracted forms used,
as there are in most cases in the spec.

- Alex.
