While I also was not overly impressed with the paper, I think we all resonate with the idea of an ecosystem. What I think the paper missed is that the more brute force approaches are likely more appropriate when things are a smaller scale and have less global effects. As any system grows, the initial approaches are not always scalable and need to evolve.
I had some other thoughts but the paper is out of reach. If anything significant, I'll pass it on.

Indeed the paper seems more of a survey study but I bet the James Moore book would be a better and more interesting read.
