Yikes, I already reverted to using a book and doing something similar to the body pages for the titlepage pages (that is, making custom master pages for them as well as the body pages) and that has given me the result I’m after.

Hi Alan,

It's hard to say why your customization doesn't work without seeing more details.  Can you isolate the code in your customization that generates the problem?
