Hi Sacha,

Thank you for the information, in fact I had suggested if jBPM could be used
precisely because I have seen the press release you refer to. I have seen
from the minutes of the TC conference call on the 25th October, that some
members had some reservation to use jBPM, and recommended "ActiveBPEL". I am
not aware of technical problems regarding the use of jBPM,  however I have
found this mail on the jBPM developer's forum that might be interesting.

I am currently following up on this lead..

i just want to give you all some insight in the ideas we are working out for
the next version of jbpm. your feedback is highly appreciated. Following 2
issues are the main improvements for the 3.0 version. 
 
layered process modelling 
=================== 
this means that we are finalizing the core process model and its execution.
version 2 already had a core engine that was based on a directed graph. in
version 3 we will separate the directed graph core engine from the JPDL
stuff. This will enable us to implement other models (such as BPEL, ebXML,
XPDL, BPML, ...) on top of the core jbpm engine. 
 
pluggable architecture 
================= 
We have done extended research to identify and isolate the responsibilities
of workflow management systems (aka perspectives). E.g. state management,
context management, integration, task mgmt, interface, time based events,
... 
 
State management is the central responsibility. One of the reasons of
existence for workflow mgmt systems is that programming languages are not
well suited to express states. All the other responsibilities are add-ons
that decorate the state management.  
 
The new architecture of jbpm 3 will have state management as the basic
layer. On top of that a number of optional modules can be plugged in. Each
module corresponds to a responsibility. This pluggable architecture will
allow users of jbpm to select only the responsibilities they need. And on
top of that, they will also be able to plug in new modules that extend the
funtionalities of the core engine.  
 
I will make some more information available on our vision of the
responsibilities shortly.

For a work at University I have played [1] with ebBP 1.01. But it is
incomplete: no join/fork/decision, no business signals, no timers ... And it
is written in Ruby (guess most people expect Java).

There is www.jbpm.org which was just joined into the jboss project. It is
available under the LGPL licence if that matters to you. I think they are
based on Van der Aalst's extended petri nets theories/works. They list ebXML
BPSS on their website. So that might be something to look at.
