Subject: Re: [egov] ebXML, Hutchinson Holdings, Terror Threats and ContainerShipment Tracking

Joe,

I think that's a bit of a stretch. Materials management is a different
animal.- see the OAGi website - and the BODs for that one.

What we're talking about here is manifesting. You need to know three
things - what is in the container - down to the package
breakout level - right now they only know at the overall consignment level -
bear in mind a container may contain multiple
breakout shipments - and then who packed what - and then where the container
originated and who used it last prior to that.
Again there's millions of containers just lying around on lots - so some
kinda history provides valuable risk assessment.

So this would really be applicable to international shipments especially.
I'm not sure what UBL is doing right now for
shipments and customs manifesting. The current EDI and UNEDIFACT for
manifests only package at the shipping agent
level - so that could be across multiple containers - so you only have a
vague idea of what is where.

Anyway - having said all that - it would make *total* sense to develop a UBL
family set for this - because that is exactly
what Hutchinson are saying - there is no standard way of doing this - and no
standard process for it.

Thinking more on this - the people to help is RoadWay. They've already
automated to the container level - packing
instructions to the N-th detail - even where in the container a package
goes - so as to maximize the space usage.

I've Cc:d Dave Pavlich here to see if he can chip here with some useful
input....and some sample XML perhaps...

Thanks, DW
